Product Overview You can now synchronize entire directories between your home and work computers automatically using email as a transport, if your two computers are each running Share By Mail(tm). In order to send hundreds of multi-megabyte files automatically using email, we had to overcome the attachment size and storage space limitations of the intervening mail servers. The Share By Mail programs on each computer cooperate to keep the files flowing without overloading intervening mail servers. Share By Mail™ Peer Profile monitors a selected directory and its sub-directories for new or changed files, and sends the new or modified files over email to the machine running Share By Mail with a matching Peer Profile. Each Peer Profile machine may send commands to the other Peer Profile machine regarding new or modified files. Share By Mail™ Master Profile monitors a selected directory and its sub-directories for new or changed files, and sends the new or modified files over email to the machine running Share By Mail with a corresponding Slave Profile. The Slave Profile machine does not command the Master Profile machine regarding new or modified files in any way. System Requirements and Recommendations Required: Computers running Windows® NT4/2000/XP/2003/98/Me and connected to the Internet through something other than AOL. Each computer must be able to send email through SMTP and receive email through POP3. Recommended: A dedicated email address for each 3 profiles. If 3 machines;"Bob","Carol", and "Ted" were in use, and 3 Peer profiles were used "Bob and Carol", "Carol and Ted", and "Bob and Ted"; then one email could handle it. Niwot Networks can provide a suitable email account for a reasonable fee. Performance With POP3 and Profile scan intervals of 1 minute, it takes about 5 minutes for an email to be sent, noticed, downloaded, and acknowledged. With 1 megabyte attachments, a 4 megabyte window, and a broadband connection we see 1 megabyte per minute throughput. Share By Mail overcomes email's file size limitations, keeps track of how many megabytes are in flight so that we don't overload the servers. It has Peer-to-Peer profiles (so I can share whole folders between work and home). It has Master-to-Slave profiles so that one location can be the gold standard and the other location can be a faithful copy. It has sophisticated AES-128 (Rijndael) encryption to keep the email content private.
